Day 5 – Hangover Skiing and the Swollen Face

The day after my birthday… we had a late start. I woke up gasping for water to find my forehead swollen and painful like something from the film Cone-heads! I think when I fell over on the first day I must had banged my forehead but for some reason it has only just turned into a lump. Mario says I look very different. Despite the pain I think it is great – the swelling between my eyebrows has made my wrinkles disappear!

Today I discovered that skiing with a hangover is not a recipe for star performances. We went straight on to a red run and did surprisingly well – no falls. We’re both getting pretty good now but with bad heads the day was rather subdued. We have already been on most if not all of the slopes and are running out of places to explore. I think anyone who is competent on skis should really consider a location with more runs like in the Alps so they don’t get bored.

We ended up calling it a day after a couple of hours and went back to rest after a quick snack. I have to confess that my diet has has consisted mainly of chicken kebabs and hot dogs this week. You can’t get away from them. One thing I do recommend is the hot wine which you can get from the restaurants at the bottom of the slopes. I’ve found it warms you and gives you Dutch courage! I did spot a ski instructor with a hip flask making his coffee ‘Irish’ today… he must know best.

Another quick tip - if anyone is planning to stay at Cedar Lodge III in Bansko then you better be quick on your feet. You get 20 seconds of light in the corridor when you press the switch. That means you have to run from the lift to your room otherwise your are left in pitch black fumbling for the key hole!

Finally as promised here are some pictures of the silly hats.
